City Stays Zagreb / Opatija / Zadar / Split / Dubrovnik
4 Days / 3 Nights
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a Central European city which is well connected by air, road and train to other European cities. Shaped by
Habsburg rule, Zagreb typifies the a Mediterranean way of life with an excellent nightlife. The city's must-see is the Cathedral, and Opera
House as well as the funicular linking the Upper and Lower Towns. Laid out according to Habsburg design, with a 'horseshoe' of green space
separating its elegant facades, Zagreb is surprisingly small for a capital city of one million people.
The tourist resort of Opatija, takes its name from a 14th century Benedictine Abbey around which the village was built. Opatija has one of
the most stunning coastal views in Croatia and is enhanced by a beautiful 12 km promenade walk from Volosko to Lovran with Opatija in
the centre. Opatija was 'the' fashionable seaside resort of the Austro Hungarian Empire until WW1. The grand residences of the wealthy are
now elegant hotels offering an experience of a bygone age.
Northern Dalmatia is the lesser known stretch of Croatia's Adriatic coast. Its centrepiece is the port of Zadar, with as much Roman, Byzantine
and Venetian history as the more familiar hubs of Split and Dubrovnik. Encircled by Venetian fortifications, part of the old Roman Forum
forms the focus of the city. On the north shore the sea organ emits unworldly tones through holes bored into the smooth new paving, their
size and velocity played by the waves of the sea.
Split, the second largest city of Croatia (circa.420, 000 inhabitants) is an important port and a major cultural, tourist, industrial and sports
centre in the middle of the Dalmatian coast. The focus of the city falls on the adjoining hubs of the palm lined Adriatic promenade called
the Riva and Diocletian's Roman Palace. Four gates guard its entrances, Gold, Silver, Iron and Bronze. Amid the narrow streets and alleyways
there are two outstanding landmarks – the courtyard of the Perestil and the Cathedral of Sveti Duje.
Dubrovnik, the centre of the southernmost region of Dalmatia and its most famous representative, is also the star on the front pages of
many prestigious world magazines, as well as being at the very top of the scale of the most beautiful cities of the world. Year on year it is
proving itself as a source of inspiration for artists, a venue favoured by members of royal families and the jet setters of the world.
"Those who seek paradise on Earth must come to Dubrovnik", so wrote George Bernard Shaw, smitten by the beauty of the city whose
untouched, 1940 m long defensive walls - today under the protection of UNESCO - girdle in a city which carries the appellation of the "Pearl
of the Adriatic". Sitting at the southernmost part of Croatia, harbouring centuries of heritage created by the noble skills of the finest builders
and artists, Dubrovnik basks in a warm Mediterranean climate with lemon and orange groves and tangerine trees, sumptuous palms and
agaves, and is adorned by Renaissance parks and the flowering gardens of medieval stone palaces and unobtrusive monasteries.
